Let's be direct: it's a very bad idea to put bags in a washing machine! First, it has to fit in the machine's drum, which isn't always possible. In a washing machine, the outer material and foam padding would be damaged, shortening its lifespan. Even if it seems like a simpler and quicker solution, don't put it in the washing machine! What can you do instead?
How to hand wash a backpack, waist bag, or wallet?
The only way to remove dust, mud, and stains, and to clean more easily, is hand washing. This is a gentle method that won't damage the bag's components and will preserve its color.
To hand wash your backpack or waist bag, you will need:
- a vacuum cleaner
- a basin/bucket or shower tray
- a stiff-bristled brush or sponge if it's a small backpack or waist bag
- soap (or shower gel, baby shampoo, etc.)
- a microfiber towel.
Cleaning steps:
- Empty the bag! To make sure nothing is left inside, turn it inside out with all pockets open!
- Remove any foam inserts and frames – if possible, and if you are confident you can put them back.
- Vacuum the bag inside and out. Pay special attention to the zippers and the corners of the bag.
- Fill the basin/bucket with cold or lukewarm water, add soap, and submerge the bag!
- Use a brush or sponge to scrub the stains inside and out.
- Once done, rinse it in clean, cold or lukewarm water.
- Finally, wipe it with a microfiber towel, including the zippers! If there is foam in the bag, press it and wring out the water thoroughly.
After washing, it's time for drying! Do not use a machine (tumble dryer, hairdryer...), let it air dry outdoors or in a dry room. Do not expose it to the sun, as UV radiation accelerates material wear. If possible, hang it inside out on a clothesline.
